Cost of Living/Taxes

A low cost of living is a great advantage for Clinton residents. Property taxes are relatively low when compared to other cities in the metro area, as we as to other states.

Property Tax

Based on an assessed value of 10 percent of real value, times the millage rate of 129.43 per assessed value, less a flat deduction for Homestead Exemption. For homeowners over the age of 65, the first $7,500 of assessed value is exempt from taxation.

State Income Tax

Ranges from three to five percent of taxable income after exemptions and standard deductions. Also, all income from federal, state or private retirement plans is totally exempt from state income tax.

Sales Tax

Clinton has a seven percent sales tax on all retail purchases, as well as an additional two percent on hotel/motel lodging for special tourism and economic development projects. Sales tax on automobiles is five percent.

Safety

Clinton has one of the lowest crime rates and one of the best fire ratings of any city in the state – factors all residents appreciate. Highly trained and skilled professionals man the Police and Fire Departments, which boast of some of the best facilities in the state.

Climate

Residents enjoy a mild climate with four distinct seasons, allowing for year-round outdoor activities. In addition, gardeners are able to grow many varieties of flowering plants throughout the year. The annual average temperature is 64 degrees F.

Cultural/Educational

Mississippi College, the state's oldest educational institution of higher learning that is located in Clinton, offers residents a variety of artistic, theatric and musical programs as well as sports events. In addition, the Office of Continuing Education at MC provides educational opportunities through the Senior Adult Education Program and the Programs for Adult Cultural Enrichment.

Recreation

The active adult will find recreational activities plentiful and within close proximity. There's golf, fishing, boating and hunting, plus walking and biking trails, nature exhibits and picnic areas. Mississippi College and the Clinton Public Schools offer spectator sports, and professional baseball and hockey are also available minutes away in Jackson. In addition, the Baptist Healthplex at MC, the YMCA, the Cascades Racquet Club as well as the Clinton Parks & Recreation Department offer a variety of programs ranging from swimming and tennis to exercising and walking groups.

Worship

Almost every major religious body is represented at more than forty churches in Clinton providing a steady offering of worship activities and family programs. Clinton prides itself in a diversity from which its people draw strength.

There are many ways to get involved in the community and make new friends. If being a part of a social or civic group is of interest, there are a wide variety of organizations from which to choose, many of which have ongoing needs for volunteers.
