Community Development
The Community Development Department, 202 West Leake Street, is comprised of two divisions. The Planning/Zoning and Building Code Services Departments provide professional and technical services in the fields of planning, land use and control, zoning and construction inspection of public improvements, floodplain management, sign ordinance administration and code enforcement.

The Community Development Department is responsible for the issuance of all construction permits and related inspections and provides professional advice regarding planning, zoning, and community development issues. Staff members meet with developers, architects, builders, and property owners to discuss potential new construction as well as renovation of existing commercial buildings and historic/non-historic residences. The Community Development Department also functions as a clearinghouse to answer questions from residents, property owners, merchants, real-estate brokers, and others concerning future development in and around the City.
